Early orthodontic treatment

Early orthodontic treatment for children in Hammersmith

Most parents assume orthodontics is something that happens at thirteen, once all the adult teeth are through. By then, some of the most useful opportunities have already passed.

Assessments from age 8

Why we assess children from the age of 8

From around the age of 8 we can see how a child’s jaw and bite are developing while they are still growing. That is the point of an early assessment. Not to put a brace on an eight-year-old, but to know what is coming.

Certain growth issues are far easier to guide while a child is still growing than to correct once they have stopped. Spotting them early can mean simpler treatment later, occasionally none at all, and in some cases it avoids more complicated or invasive treatment altogether.

Most children we see at this age walk out with nothing more than a plan and a date to come back. That is a good outcome, not a wasted appointment.

Interceptive treatment

What interceptive treatment involves

Interceptive treatment means stepping in early, while growth is still on your side, rather than waiting and dealing with a bigger problem later. What that looks like depends entirely on the child.

Because Dr Kyi is a specialist orthodontist, she is not limited to one approach. Depending on what your child needs, that might mean an appliance to guide the way the jaws are developing, creating space so adult teeth come through where they should, a partial brace on a few teeth rather than a full one, or clear aligners designed for growing mouths. Often it means no appliance at all for now, just monitoring at the right intervals.

Where aligners are the right answer, that usually means Invisalign First for younger children or Invisalign Teen once they are older.

Phase one, phase two

Two-phase treatment, explained

Early treatment is often phase one of two. Phase one deals with the things that are genuinely easier to address while a child is growing. Phase two, usually in the teenage years once all the adult teeth are through, straightens and finishes.

Parents reasonably ask whether that means two rounds of treatment instead of one. Sometimes it does. What it often buys is a shorter, simpler second phase, and occasionally it avoids something far more involved later on. If we expect your child to need two phases, we will tell you at the assessment rather than halfway through.

Signs worth
getting looked at

None of these mean treatment is definitely needed. All of them are worth an assessment, because the answer is often reassurance.

01

Teeth that are crowded, or adult teeth coming through in the wrong place

02

A bite that does not meet properly, or jaws that look out of step with each other

03

Thumb sucking that has carried on past the early years

04

Difficulty biting or chewing, or breathing through the mouth rather than the nose

05

Baby teeth lost much earlier or much later than their friends

Treatment time

How long will treatment take?

It depends on the child and what is being corrected. Rather than quote an average that may have nothing to do with your child, Dr Kyi will give you a realistic timeframe at the assessment, based on what she actually finds.

Your specialist in Hammersmith

Dr Chaw-Su Kyi is an Accredited Specialist in Orthodontics, listed on the GDC specialist register, and has spent her entire career in orthodontics - including years at Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London Hospital. She was named Specialist Orthodontist of the Year for South East England in 2025.

That matters most with children. Growing jaws are not small adult jaws, and knowing when to act and when to wait is the part that takes years of training to get right.

Hammersmith questions

Questions parents
ask us in Hammersmith

Is 8 not too young?+

Too young to start treatment, usually. Not too young to look. The assessment is about timing, and most children at this age need nothing except for us to keep an eye on them.

What if we just wait?+

For many children, waiting is exactly the right call and we will say so. For a smaller number, waiting turns something straightforward into something that needs longer or more involved treatment to correct. The assessment tells you which of those your child is.

Does my child need a referral from our dentist?+

No. You can book directly with us. If your dentist would rather refer, they can use our referral form for dentists.

Will my child definitely need braces later?+

Not necessarily, and early treatment sometimes reduces what is needed later. Where we expect a second phase, we will tell you upfront so you can plan for it.

What does the assessment cost?+

A specialist consultation for a child is £95. That is a full hour with Dr Kyi including a 3D scan and photographs, and you leave with a written plan and full costs whether or not you go ahead.
